Almond Milk has been a popular milk substitute since the Middle Ages. It is made by mixing water with finely ground almond nuts. It is very high in protein and yet low in calories and fat. It also does not contain lactose, which makes it a good milk alternative for those who are lactose intolerant. Cats love the taste of milk but studies have shown that dairy products such as milk can cause them to have diarrhea because of the lactose content. Since almond milk does not contain any lactose, is it a good substitute for our milk-loving feline friends?
Most cats are lactose intolerant, which means that they cannot break down the lactose enzymes found in milk, causing them to have stomach problems such as diarrhea when they ingest large amounts of lactose-containing products. Almond milk does not contain any lactose, but its main ingredient is almond. Experts do not recommend giving almond nuts to cats because some cats can be sensitive to them. Although they are not considered dangerous, almonds may cause minor stomach upsets, abdominal pains, and vomiting.
Some cats just really love the taste of milk but we know we should avoid giving them dairy products. Almond milk would have been a good choice for our lactose intolerant cat friends, but the almond ingredient also keeps us from giving it. Animal nutritionists agree that almond nuts are one of the foods to avoid in cats because potential stomach issues might arise. Although not considered highly toxic to cats, it is best to avoid them to prevent possible gastrointestinal problems. This would simply mean that although almond milk will not kill your cat, it is best to avoid it.
Can I Give My Cat Almond Milk? Answer: Not Recommended
Although almond milk does not contain lactose, which means that it will not cause an upset in your cat’s digestive system as ordinary cow’s milk will, almond milk contains almond nuts. Some cats are sensitive to certain nuts, which may also cause some stomach problems. Aside from that, almonds are usually seen in the “dangerous foods for cats” list. To avoid possible gastrointestinal issues and an expensive bill at your vet’s clinic, stay away from almond milk and stick to your cat’s healthy diet. Some cat owners would treat their cat to a little saucer of milk every once in a while. This is okay, as long as it is not done regularly.
If My Cat Accidentally Drinks Almond Milk
If your cat slurps a large amount of almond milk, or any milk for that matter, their system will react based on their level of sensitivity to milk and/or almonds. They will most likely experience bloating, stomach upset, and diarrhea in the next few hours, but it may be different for every case. Contact your vet for immediate advice. However, if your cat licks just a few drops of milk, relax and do not panic. It probably will not affect them, but observe them for physical reactions within the hour.
Human Foods to Avoid in Cats
There are many foods that we like to share with our cats, but it is best that we know which ones are potentially dangerous to them. Baby food may seem like a healthy treat to cats, but some of them contain onion powder, which is considered toxic to cats. Sugary foods such as candies are also a no-no to cats as they may lead to obesity and dental problems. It may possibly lead to diabetes mellitus as well. Green tomatoes are extremely dangerous to cats because of the Glycoalkaloid Solanine it contains, which is a poisonous alkaloid to cats.
The Health Benefits of Almond Milk
For many, almond milk is their choice of beverage over any other milk. This is because it offers a lot of nutritional value to the human body. It is lactose-free, soy-free, and gluten-free, making it a perfect substitute for those who are sensitive or allergic to certain ingredients found in ordinary cow’s milk. It has little or no saturated fat, but it is very rich in omega-3 fatty acids, making it a heart-healthy drink. High in protein but very low in calories, weight-conscious individuals turn to almond milk. Because almonds are rich in vitamins and minerals, almond milk provides vitamin E, manganese, selenium, potassium, calcium, and more.
My cat knocked over an open container of almonds and ate a few of them. He became very ill within a day. The almonds cannot digest in the stomach and so they became lodged between his stomach and intestine. Luckily we got him to the vet on time, and had the means to do so, to save his life. He needed surgery to remove the almond pieces. Today he is recuperating at the vet and we are thankful for his recovery.

I’ve been giving my cat and kitten almond milk and they love it. So far no digestive problems. My cat is pregnant and she drinks one small bowl a day.
